Release Date and Rollout
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey opens in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026, with early preview showings beginning the afternoon of July 16. The film is rated R, has a runtime of two hours and fifty-two minutes, and holds exclusive access to IMAX screens for its first three weeks of release — a rollout strategy designed to make the format part of the event itself.
What the Film Is About
The Odyssey is a screen adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic poem of the same name. The story follows Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca, on his long and perilous journey home after the fall of Troy — a voyage marked by encounters with sirens, a witch-goddess, and other mythic forces, all while he fights to reunite with his wife, Penelope, and reclaim his kingdom from a court of intruding suitors.
Universal Pictures has described the project as a "mythic action epic" shot across multiple international locations using newly developed IMAX film technology, marking the first time Homer's foundational story has been brought to IMAX screens.
Production Scale
With an estimated budget of $250 million, The Odyssey is believed to be the most expensive production of Nolan's career and the first film ever shot entirely on IMAX's 70mm film cameras. Nolan wrote, directed, and produced the film alongside longtime producing partner Emma Thomas, distributed by Universal Pictures under their Syncopy banner. Behind the camera, the film reunites several of Nolan's key collaborators, including cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, editor Jennifer Lame, and composer Ludwig Göransson.
Full Cast
The ensemble is one of the largest and most star-studded of Nolan's career:
- Matt Damon as Odysseus, King of Ithaca
- Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Odysseus' wife
- Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus' son
- Zendaya as Athena, goddess and protector of Odysseus
- Robert Pattinson as Antinous
- Charlize Theron as Calypso
- Lupita Nyong'o
- Additional cast members include Elliot Page, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Corey Hawkins, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Logan Marshall-Green, Benny Safdie, and musician Travis Scott in an undisclosed role
Nolan has said he cast Travis Scott specifically to draw a thematic line between rap and oral poetry as parallel art forms — a nod to the oral-storytelling roots of Homer's original text.
The New York Premiere
The Odyssey held its official premiere on July 14, 2026, at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York City. The red carpet drew much of the principal cast, including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, and Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas themselves, alongside Travis Scott, Elliot Page, Corey Hawkins, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Logan Marshall-Green, and Benny Safdie.
Why It Matters
The Odyssey marks Christopher Nolan's first film since Oppenheimer (2023), which went on to win Best Picture and Best Director at the Academy Awards. Advance ticket sales and a slow-burn marketing rollout — including a January 2026 teaser trailer and a final "countdown" trailer released in early July — have positioned the film as one of the most anticipated theatrical releases of the year, with its IMAX-exclusive window expected to drive early box-office momentum.
